How long does it take for my site to get indexed by Google?

You aren’t going to like this answer – but here it is. It depends. Google indexes websites at different rates and times depending on a lot of different factors. The better question might be “What can I do to increase the likelihood that Google will index my site more quickly?”

In no particular order:

  1. Make sure your website actually has helpful, unique, informative content divided into pages that represent topic themes. 300-500 words on a page are considered enough to pay attention to.
  2. Make sure your site is error free. Use W3C’s validator to correct architectural issues. Poorly designed websites are harder for spiders to crawl.
  3. Set up a Google Webmasters account for your site. It provides great information about your site as well as a straighter pathway to communicate with Google.
  4. Make sure that you have an XML sitemap for easier indexing, a robots.txt file that does not prevent bots from crawling your site, and perhaps even an Apache .htaccess or IIS web.config file to ensure that any older pages what no longer exist for your site are properly redirected to other areas on your site.
  5. Spend time and effort building quality backlinks, or inbound links, to your site. The absolute number of other websites that provide a link to you is important, but it is not as important as how “good” Google deems those sites to be. Try to build links with larger, authoritative sites that are considered resource pools or “go to” sites by Google.
  6. Host a blog that you actively and routinely post to on the same web server as your website.
  7. Make sure your hosting environment is reliable and responsive. Slow websites or sites that experience a lot of “down time” are much less likely to be indexed – hard to do if the spiders cannot actually get to your website.
  8. Participate in social media. Like it or not, you have to be part of the conversation. Integrate your tweets, blog posts or Facebook posts on your site as well to keep things “fresh and changing”.
  9. Create a Google Places account for your business.
  10. Grow your site over time – slow and steady. Search engines give more weight to websites that are in some way informational in nature and that regularly add good, quality content to the internet. This is often best achieved by implementing a blog or moderated forum. But don’t forget to update the rest of your site routinely as well and look for opportunities to add more pages or break one page into two more distinct themes.
  11. Be patient. Understand that the early bird gets the worm. Google pays attention to the “age” of a domain as well as how long the pages of a site have been physically indexed. An “old timer” with a ton of history and information is going to get more respect from Google than a young whippersnapper.
